Department of Paediatric Dentistry offers dental treatment and emergency dental care to children up to 19 years. Our services include treatment of dental caries and its complications, endodontics, orthodontics and minor surgical procedures e.g. tooth extractions. We provide dental care under general anaesthesia for children with special needs and oral health services at selected school campuses.
Registration for appointments
- Paediatric dentistry appointments are available without a referral letter, except for orthodontist services, where a referral letter from a dentist is recommended.
- Kindly book your appointment via Tartu University Hospital reception at 731 9100, 731 9889, 7319282 or online via National eBooking system (Estonian ID-card required).
- Children suffering from pain originating from the teeth or jaw bones or with dental trauma will receive emergency care based on the availability of appointments on the same day. Please contact 731 9100 or 731 9889 to book the appointment.

Oral Health care services at schools
Specialist medical care services
- Dental care is fully funded (free of charge) by the National Health Insurance Fund for covered children up to 19 years of age.
- Our dentists are providing preventive oral health care services for dental diseases by agreements with the Health Insurance Fund (prophylaxis) at school campuses.
- If the parent does not wish their children's dental care to be provided at school, we kindly ask them to inform the school dentist about their wishes.
- The following diagnoses are reimbursed by the Health Insurance Fund of orthodontic treatment for covered children up to 19 years of age:
1) Prognathic relationship of the jaws with a sagittal overbite of 9 mm and above;
2) progenic relationship of the jaws;
3) open bite with only molars in contact;
4) retention of permanent incisors or canine teeth;
5) missing incisor, canine tooth or more than one tooth on either side of the jaw;
6) cleft lip and palate and other congenital disorders of the face- and jawbones;
7) dental anomaly in the case of severe or moderate obstructive sleep apnoea when adeno-tonsillectomy and positive air pressure therapy (CPAP) have not been effective
8) traumatic deep bite with lower incisors in direct contact with the mucous membrane;
9) lateral crossbite involving three or more teeth on one side of the jaw significantly impairs face symmetry and development and growth of the jawbones.
Treatment of other anomalies is payable as an out-of-pocket service.
