Purpose of the project
The goal of the project is to significantly increase the compactness of TUH by creating a modern core hospital that includes surgery, intensive care, emergency medicine, and radiology. It is likewise aimed to stop medical activities in buildings that are unsuitable for this purpose. As a first step two new blocks shall be added to the existing medical complex in Maarjamõisa by the year 2008. Accordingly, in addition to the above named specialities, neurology and neurosurgery, gynecology and obstetrics, and oncology shall be concentrated into a unitary structure.
All these studies clearly indicate that buildings of Tartu University Hospital are scattered and ineffective. Currently medical services are offered in 12 different buildings, of which some are hopelessly outdated and unsuitable for offering high quality medical services. These buildings have been established considerably long time ago and own various levels of amortization. Oldest of them – Lossi 36 (Women`s Clinic) and Vallikraavi 7/9 (Hematology-Oncology Clinic) – are built in 1843 and 1872, respectively. Situation is also unfavorable logistically, economically and certainly from scientific /educational aspect because communication between different specialties is deranged. Necessity to modernize the structure and to compact the buildings is therefore obvious.
